  • A European Breeders' Cup Preview

It's a bit of a quiet week; Curlin had a workout to prep for the Jockey Club Gold Cup on the 27th and Colonel John became one of the first Breeders' Cup contenders to work over Santa Anita's new surface . Like Big Brown and a number of other potential starters, he will not have another race...

  • No Artificial Surface prep for Curlin

In my previous post I felt that the Goodwood BC made sense for Curlin. A prep race over the new Pro-Ride >> surface, and then being bedded down and avoiding the cross country shipping for the Classic seemed a likely move. To me this was quite a logical step, and would have prevented the embarrassment...

  • Bookends

While the Travers and the Pacific Classic mean that the weekend (and the country) will be bookended with G1 races, let's not overlook Wait a While's second win in the Ballston Spa yesterday. The victory, her 11th win in 22 starts, makes her look positively old-school compared to the boys now...

  • Travers 139: Disconnect illustrated

Saratoga Springs, New York So while the august owners of Big Brown await the creation of a phony grass race at Belmont Park or more likely Philadelphia Park to accommodate their bloated egos, feed the bankroll without taxing their overblown animal, the rest of the three-year-old division will gather...

  • Derby Day Dawns...

...and I'm back in business (after a sojourn to DC that involved some work at Archives II , Pizzeria Paradsio , catching the Oaks on TV at a bar, Crowded House and some early trains). I'm catching up on everything happened yesterday and was obviously disturbed to hear about Chelokee's breakdown;...

  • James Scully's Morning Notes (May 1, 2008)

On this sunny and warm morning, a huge crowd was on hand to watch BIG BROWN (Boundary) blow out three furlongs in preparation for the Kentucky Derby (G1). He looked spectacular entering the track, acting cool and collected as he walked down the backside, and the exercise rider had a hard time holding...

  • Kentucky Derby Notes (May 1, 2008)

The last timed work for a horse entered in Kentucky Derby 134 was turned in Thursday by morning-line favorite Big Brown, who covered three furlongs in :35.40. The 35.40 was a bit faster than the :36 to :37 range Dutrow talked about Wednesday, but he said the time wasn’t a problem. read more
