The Sons of A.P. Indy at Stud

The legend began in 1989 when top Kentucky horsemen William Farish III and William Kilroy bred a mare by the immortal Secretariat named Weekend Surprise to the great Triple Crown winner and leading sire Seattle Slew. The result was a genetic masterpiece – a dark bay or brown colt that would become A.P. Indy.

A.P. Indy was always the ultimate mix of impeccable looks and pedigree. As a yearling he commanded the top price of $2.9 million at the Keeneland Sale, going to Japanese owner Tomonori Tsurumaki.

A.P. Indy enjoyed a successful career on the track while racing at the highest of levels. As a 3-year-old, he won an American Classic - the Belmont Stakes (G1) - and bested his elders in the richest race in North America – the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1).

Trained by Hall of Famer Neil Drysdale, A.P. Indy raced in 1991 and 1992. As a 2-year old, he displayed his precociousness by winning the Hollywood Futurity (G1). At 3, he also won the Santa Anita Derby (G1), San Rafael Stakes (G2) and Peter Pan Stakes (G2), on top of his big wins in the Belmont and Breeders' Cup Classic.

In 1992, A.P. Indy was honored with a pair of Eclipse Awards as Horse of the Year and Champion 3-year-old. In his career he had 11 starts, winning 8 races with earnings of $2,979,815.

He was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 2000.

A.P. Indy is known for his regal ancestry, his on-the-track accomplishments - and his legend continues to grow through his successful progeny.

Since being retired to stud at Lanes End in Kentucky, A.P. Indy has turned into the world’s premier Thoroughbred stallion and is currently in his prime. Through early 2008, he has sired 7 champions and 111 stakes winners with progeny earnings quickly approaching $100 million.

He was the leading sire in North America in 2003 and 2006. And in 2005 alone he sired 16 stakes winners. His progeny includes a Horse of the Year, male and female champions, winners of the continent's biggest Grade 1 races, and a dozen millionaires. Several sons at stud are carrying the legendary sire line into the future to mold the Thoroughbred breed for generations to come.
